Buttock Augmentation

Actress and singer Jennifer Lopez may be the single biggest reason why women have been seeking plastic surgeons to augment their buttocks. With proper placement, implants can enhance the size and shape of the buttock in the quest for that coveted hourglass figure. This procedure can safely reshape a woman's body, giving it a beautiful feminine contour. Many women find that their waists seem smaller following buttock enlargement.

During the consultation, you and your surgeon will discuss the changes that you would like to make in your appearance. Show your doctor pictures of buttocks sizes and shapes you like. From this, the proper implant size is selected. Recommendations on whether a buttocks lift or liposuction might also be beneficial are made.

Buttock Implant Shapes

Under general anesthesia, an incision, 2-3 inches in length is made down the buttock crease. The silicone implants are placed into each buttock area in a pocket created by the surgeon. The implant used is made of cohesive silicone gel which is more solid than that used in a breast augmentation scenario. Its design will endure the pressure of sitting or walking and will not leak, even if torn. The implants are inserted between the gluteal medius and gluteal maximus, just below the fascia. The surrounding muscle and fascia hold them in place as well as prevent from external stress. An earlier technique of inter muscular augmentation only augmented the upper third of the buttocks whereas implants can address the entire area. Although this area does carry a higher infection risk, it also provides unnoticeable post recovery scars.  After making sure the buttocks are symmetrical and look natural, the incisions are stitched. Depending on the extent procedure, it will take 2-3 hours.

When you wake up you will feel tired, sore, and stiff. A patient is fitted with a body garment that aids in the healing process and helps skin adapt to its new contours. Lay prone for the first three days following the surgery to avoid pressure to the area. Shortly afterwards, you can begin sitting up and gradually start walking again. The incision is expected to heal within 2 weeks at which time, the sutures are removed. Full physical activities can be slowly reintroduced after a month. Patients will need six to eight months until the butt implants feel as if they are part of the body.

Buttock Augmentation FAQs

Brazilian Butt Lifts

Q: What is a Brazilian Butt Lift?

A: Fat grafting uses excess fat from other areas of the body, which act as donor sites. The donor sites include the abdomen, hips, back or thighs to add shape to the buttocks. The fat cells are delicately removed with a gentle liposuction technique, and then inserted through small incisions into different layers of the buttocks.

Suitable Candidates

Q: Am I a candidate for Buttock Augmentation?

A: If you are in good health (no serious health concerns) and have realistic expectations -- you may be a good candidate for Buttock Augmentation. Some individuals can exercise and lift weights or 'do' squats until they are blue in the face and cannot seem to build muscle in the buttock area. If you are one of these individuals, you may be a candidate for Buttock Augmentation.

Fat Transfer To Buttocks

Q: What about fat transfer for buttock implants?

A: Not usually performed. Fat is good for augmenting smaller areas, such as areas on the face, or even in cellulite smoothing, but not larger areas. Free Fat Transfer (FFT), or Micro Fat Grafting (MFG), is commonly used for lip enhancement, or smoothing wrinkles and cellulite depressions, but because it tends to be absorbed or 'washed' from the area, it isn't ideally suited for larger fills.

Post Operative Expectations

Q: What should I expect post-operatively?

A: You can expect to be pretty sore. You are not allowed to sleep on your back for several weeks and can sit with the help of a pillow at 1 week post-op. Pain medications should alleviate most of the pain or discomfort you may feel. You must be careful not to strain the muscles in that area or squat for a few weeks. Your sutures on the exterior may be of the dissolving or non-dissolving type. Of they are non-dissolving they will be removed in approximately 10 days.

Back To Work

Q: How soon can I get back to day to day activities and work?

A: It depends greatly on the specific procedure, and the individual. Some patients tolerate surgical procedures better than others. But, on average most patients are back to work within a week, or ten days. Your surgeon will advise you of the time you'll need and can give you guidance in the amount of time you will be away from your workplace. If complications arise, additional time away from work may be required.

Final Results

Q: How long until I will see the final result?

A: This depends on the individual. Some people bruise easily, while others don't. Generally there will be swelling and some bruising after surgery. Both will usually disappear over a week or two. The final optimal result can usually be appreciated a few months after surgery. At first, you may feel uncomfortable after buttock implant surgery. It may seem to you at first as though you're sitting on a wallet, or padding.

Buttocks Implant Weight

Q: How much do implants weigh?

A: Generally it depends on the type and size of the implant. But, generally they only weigh a few ounces each.

Bathing After Surgery

Q: Can I bathe or shower after the operation?

A: The taped dressing must be kept dry and remain in place until your stitches have dissolved, which is normally 7-10 days. You can normally return to bathing after the 10th day
